Training with Steve Fisher of Sentinel Concepts: My 2-Day Shotgun Journey

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to train with Steve Fisher of Sentinel Concepts during his 2-Day Practical and Critical Shotgun class. While I’ve always had an appreciation for the shotgun as a defensive tool, this class truly opened my eyes to its capabilities and versatility in real-world scenarios.

Breaking the Myths of the Shotgun

One of the most important takeaways from the class was how much the internet underestimates the shotgun’s potential. Many people believe a shotgun is only effective within a range of 25 yards or less. However, with quality 00 buck ammunition, we learned that the shotgun can reliably engage targets out to 50 yards. The precision and power of a well-loaded shotgun blew away all the misconceptions about excessive spread and limited range.

Contrary to the popular myth, a shotgun doesn’t “spray” pellets uncontrollably with each shot. With proper ammunition, the spread is far more contained than one might think, making it a highly effective and precise tool. When combined with the right training, the shotgun becomes a formidable option for home defense, especially when deadly threats are involved.

Choosing the Right Tool

This class made me reconsider my choice of primary weapon for home defense. While my AR-15 and handgun have always been trusted tools, the sheer stopping power and effectiveness of the shotgun at various ranges convinced me that it’s the superior option, especially in and around the house. After the training, I decided to invest in a Vang Comp Remington 870 shotgun. It offers the reliability, precision, and stopping power I need to defend my home, surpassing what I feel my AR or handgun could do in similar situations.

Training Takeaways

Steve Fisher is an exceptional instructor. His deep knowledge and experience with shotguns transformed the way I approach defensive strategies. The emphasis on real-world application was invaluable. We didn’t just focus on shooting at a stationary target but trained on how to effectively deploy the shotgun in dynamic situations, making it clear that with the right training and ammunition, the shotgun is a critical tool for defense.

If you’ve been on the fence about shotguns or are relying solely on internet myths for your understanding, I highly recommend this class. You’ll leave with not only a deeper respect for the weapon but also the skills to use it to its fullest potential.

In conclusion, my time at Sentinel Concepts reinforced the importance of training and opened a new chapter for me in defensive strategies. The Vang Comp Remington 870 is now my go-to choice for protecting my home, and I couldn’t feel more confident about it.
